VW/Audi Crankshaft Seal

The engine crankshaft seal, or "main seal", prevents oil from leaking out of the engine around the crankshaft. Your crankshaft seal is positioned where the crankshaft exits the engine block, typically at the front or rear of the engine.

The crankshaft seal helps maintain the proper oil pressure inside the engine, which is essential for lubricating the internal components and ensuring smooth engine operation.

Engine Crankshaft Seal Failure Symptoms

• Oil leaks: One of the most noticeable signs is oil leaking from the front or rear of the engine. This can be seen around the crankshaft pulley (front seal) or near the transmission area (rear seal)
• Burning oil smell: If the oil leak from the seal reaches hot engine components, you may notice a burning oil smell
• Check engine light: In some cases, oil pressure may drop if the crankshaft seal leaks significantly, triggering the check engine light
